Does Collagen Skincare Work? What Trials Say About Collagen Creams and Supplements

Collagen applied to the skin is too large to replace the collagen your skin has lost. In the one placebo-controlled trial we found, a 2.5% collagen serum did nothing measurable that placebo did not [1]. At best, topical collagen works as a moisturising film. Evidence for collagen supplements is disputed [2][3].

Collagen is a structural protein. On labels it appears as Soluble Collagen, Hydrolyzed Collagen or Atelocollagen; 'marine collagen' comes from fish. Products named for collagen often also contain peptides or other actives that do more of the work.

Topical collagen. In a six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 56 women aged 60–93, neither a 2.5% topical hydrolysed collagen serum nor 5 g a day of oral collagen, alone or together, did better than placebo on any skin measure [1]. A small lab-plus-volunteer study reported reduced eye-area wrinkles with a fish collagen gel, but it did not measure whether collagen entered the skin [4].

Collagen supplements. Two meta-analyses disagree. One (19 trials) favoured collagen for hydration, elasticity and wrinkles [3]. A later one (23 trials, 1,474 people) found the benefits appeared only in industry-funded and lower-quality trials, and concluded there was no clinical evidence for supplements [2].

Buy it for its texture and hydration, not to rebuild collagen. If firmness is the goal, sunscreen every day and a retinoid are far better supported than anything labelled 'collagen'. Collagen products may be fish- or animal-derived, which matters if you avoid animal ingredients.
