Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate: Is the 'Pitera' Ingredient Worth It?

Galactomyces essences can improve hydration and skin texture in the short term, according to studies run by the company that makes SK-II [1][2]. We found no independent trials of galactomyces on its own, and the long-term 'reversal' claims come from a study with no comparison group [1].

It is the liquid left after fermenting with a yeast, sold by SK-II as 'Pitera'. On labels look for Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate. Other ferments — Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Lactobacillus Ferment — are different ingredients, and results for one do not carry over to another.

Long-term use. 86 women used three galactomyces-based products for 12 months; wrinkles, spots, roughness and hydration improved. There was no control group, and the authors work for or with the manufacturer [1].

Pores and texture. In two four-week studies (47 and 57 young women), a galactomyces formula reduced pore area, roughness and redness compared with each person's starting point, without a placebo; again manufacturer-affiliated [2].

Post-acne marks. A placebo-controlled trial with 51 people found a serum combining galactomyces, dexpanthenol and centella lightened post-acne marks more than placebo at some time points [3] — evidence for that three-ingredient serum, not for galactomyces alone.

Galactomyces essences are generally well tolerated and suit dull or dehydrated skin. Korean galactomyces essences cost a fraction of the original, which makes them a low-risk way to see whether you like a ferment-based first essence.
