The short answer
We searched the medical literature and found no human clinical trial of Korean mugwort (Artemisia princeps or capillaris) applied to skin. The evidence is lab and animal work: it raised skin-barrier proteins in skin cells [1] and reduced skin inflammation in mice [2][3]. 'Clinically proven to calm' is not a claim the evidence supports.
What it is, and how to spot it
Korean mugwort ('ssuk') is a leafy herb; Ganghwa mugwort is a well-known variety. On labels look for Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract, Artemisia Princeps Leaf Water, Artemisia Capillaris Extract or Artemisia Vulgaris Extract.
What the research shows
Skin cells. Mugwort extract increased filaggrin and loricrin — two proteins that help hold the skin barrier together — in human skin cells [1]. Tiny particles from mugwort increased collagen precursors in cells and in a lab-grown skin model [4].
Animals. Applied to mice, mugwort leaf extract reduced swelling and inflammation in contact dermatitis [2], and Artemisia capillaris reduced eczema-like skin damage and allergy markers [3].
All of this is early research. It suggests why people find mugwort soothing, but it does not show what a mugwort essence does on human skin.
Who should be careful
Mugwort belongs to the daisy family. These plants contain compounds that can cause contact allergy, and mugwort shares allergens with ragweed pollen [5]; allergic contact dermatitis to mugwort has been reported [6]. If you have hay fever from mugwort or ragweed, or a known daisy-family allergy, patch-test first — the very group that buys 'calming' products may be the most likely to react.
