Panthenol (Vitamin B5) in Skincare: Does It Really Soothe and Repair?

Panthenol is a sensible, gentle moisturising ingredient. Small vehicle-controlled trials found it raises skin hydration, reduces water loss and helps skin recover from irritation [1][2][3]. What the evidence does not show is that it 'repairs damaged skin' or fights ageing in healthy skin.

Panthenol is provitamin B5: your skin converts it to pantothenic acid. Dexpanthenol is the form used in medicines. On labels look for Panthenol, D-Panthenol, Dexpanthenol or Calcium Pantothenate.

Hydration and the barrier. In a double-blind, vehicle-controlled study, a week of dexpanthenol raised skin hydration and reduced water loss compared with the plain base [2].

Recovery from irritation. After skin was irritated with a harsh detergent, dexpanthenol sped up barrier repair and reduced redness compared with both the base cream and untreated skin [3]. In a 26-day forearm trial (21 people), a 5% cream protected against the same detergent better than placebo — but only hydration differed significantly; most other measures did not [1].

After procedures. A review found dexpanthenol helps superficial wounds and skin after cosmetic procedures re-surface faster [4]. Note that its authors work for the company that makes Bepanthen.

Dry, tight or irritated skin, and skin recovering from over-exfoliation. Allergy to panthenol is uncommon but appears to be rising: positive patch tests have climbed from well under 1% to about 1.2% of people tested [5]. Because panthenol often appears in products marketed as 'hypoallergenic', check the ingredient list if you have reacted to it before.
