The short answer
Some peptides have small placebo-controlled trials showing modest, short-term improvements in fine lines [1][2]. But reviews find the evidence sparse and methodologically weak [4], and the original paper on the 'Botox-like' peptide itself says its effect is much weaker than Botox [3]. Peptides are gentle; they are not dramatic.
The main types, and how to spot them
Signal peptides — Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 ('Matrixyl'), Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 — are marketed as collagen 'messengers'. Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 ('Argireline') is marketed as a muscle relaxer. Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) is a copper carrier.
What the research shows
Matrixyl. In a 12-week split-face trial with 93 women, palmitoyl pentapeptide improved wrinkles and fine lines compared with placebo, and was well tolerated [1].
Argireline. In a four-week trial with 60 Chinese people, about half of those using argireline felt it worked, against none on placebo, and skin roughness fell [2]. The original 2002 study found its effect on nerve signals was much lower than botulinum toxin's [3].
The wider picture. A systematic review of collagen-stimulating peptides found only six of 15 studies used a placebo and only five were double-blind [4]. A 2026 meta-analysis of 19 trials found a modest overall effect on wrinkles, driven mainly by peptides taken by mouth rather than applied to skin [6]. For copper peptides, the one small trial after laser treatment found no objective difference from control [5].
Who they suit
Sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinoids or acids, and anyone wanting a low-irritation anti-ageing step. Do not expect retinoid-level results; daily sunscreen does more for fine lines than any peptide.
