The short answer
Topical vitamin C has small, real trials behind it: smoother, less creased photoaged skin and some lightening of dark marks [1][2]. The catch is the form. Pure ascorbic acid needs an acidic formula to get into skin [3], and many gentler derivatives have much less human evidence.
Read the label: which vitamin C is it?
Ascorbic Acid is pure vitamin C — the best studied, but unstable and potentially stinging. Common derivatives in Korean products include Ascorbyl Glucoside, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Ascorbyl Palmitate. They are more stable and gentler, but the evidence differs a lot between them.
What the research shows
Photoaged skin. A six-month double-blind trial found a 5% vitamin C cream improved overall appearance and fine skin relief compared with the same cream without vitamin C [1]. A systematic review of seven trials (139 people) found treated skin was smoother, less wrinkled and objectively lighter — but hydration improved just as much with placebo, and the best concentration is unknown [2].
Getting it into skin. In pig-skin studies, pure ascorbic acid was absorbed only when the formula was below pH 3.5, peaking at 20%. Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and ascorbyl palmitate did not raise vitamin C levels in the skin at all [3].
Derivatives with human data. A 5% sodium ascorbyl phosphate lotion beat its plain base on every acne measure in a 12-week trial with 50 people [4]. A 28% ascorbyl glucoside complex lightened age spots more than placebo on the other half of the face in 27 women over 24 weeks — though two authors worked for the maker [5]. We found no human trials for 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, only lab work.
Who it suits, and cautions
Most skin types. Pure ascorbic acid can sting sensitive skin; derivatives are gentler. A safety review found 5–10% products did not sensitise or irritate test panels [6]. Store vitamin C away from heat and light, and replace it if it turns dark orange.
How to choose
For wrinkles and tone, the strongest evidence is for ascorbic acid in an acidic serum [1][3]. For sensitive or acne-prone skin, sodium ascorbyl phosphate has a trial behind it [4]. Most Korean toners and mists contain far lower amounts than the trials used, so treat those as antioxidant extras. The products below are compared daily across UK retailers.
