The short answer
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a good hydrator and a modest elasticity booster. In the best-controlled trial we found, creams with lower-molecular-weight HA also reduced wrinkle depth around the eyes a little [1]. What the evidence does not support is the big marketing language: "replaces lost HA", "plumps like filler", or dramatic wrinkle reduction.
What it is, and how to spot it
HA is a water-binding sugar molecule your skin makes itself. On Korean labels it usually appears as Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid or Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate. Products that boast "multi-molecular" or "5 types of HA" are mixing several of these sizes.
What the research shows
Hydration and elasticity. In a 60-day, vehicle-controlled trial with 76 women, every 0.1% HA cream tested — from small (50 kDa) to large (2,000 kDa) molecules — improved skin hydration and elasticity more than the plain base cream [1].
Fine lines. In the same trial, only the two smallest molecule sizes (50 and 130 kDa) measurably reduced wrinkle depth around the eyes [1]. That is a real but small effect in one area.
Why size matters. On laboratory samples of human skin, small HA fragments (20–300 kDa) got into the outer layer, while large ones (over 1,000 kDa) stayed on the surface [2]. Large HA still helps — it holds water on top of the skin — but it works as a surface hydrator.
Be careful with headline numbers. One widely quoted study of a 'nano' HA reported big percentage improvements, but it had no control group and the largest figures were best-case individuals rather than averages [3]. A more recent review found an HA serum helped anti-wrinkle injection results last longer, but it was funded by the manufacturer [4].
Who it suits
Almost everyone. HA is one of the gentlest actives, which is why it sits in toners, essences, serums and even sunscreens. It is especially useful for dehydrated skin that feels tight, and for oily skin that wants hydration without heaviness. Apply it to slightly damp skin and follow with a moisturiser so the water it draws has somewhere to stay.
How to choose a Korean HA product
Look for a product that names low-molecular or 'multi-molecular' HA if fine lines are your goal, since that is where the trial evidence sits [1][2]. Otherwise, choose by texture and price: a watery toner or essence does the hydration job as well as an expensive serum.
