COSRX launched in 2014 under the philosophy "Cosmetics + RX" — pharmaceutical rigor applied to consumer skincare. Founder Sanghoon Jeon, a chemist, designed the catalogue around what dermatologists actually recommend: low-irritation actives at well-studied concentrations, on stable bases, without the fragrance-and-fluff that defined Western drugstore brands at the time.

The brand's breakout moment was the Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (2014). At a moment when "snail mucin" was a curiosity, COSRX shipped a 96% snail secretion filtrate at £18 — and let Reddit and Caroline Hirons sell it. By 2018 it was the #1 imported skincare product in the UK on LookFantastic. The follow-up Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream did the same for moisturisers.

COSRX is now owned by Amorepacific (since 2021), Korea's largest beauty conglomerate. That ownership funded global retail expansion (Boots UK, CVS US) but the formulation team in Seongdong, Seoul has stayed independent. The Centella Blemish Ampoule and BHA Blackhead Power Liquid remain the dermatologist-recommended entry points to K-beauty for acne-prone skin under 25.

What's honest about COSRX: they don't over-claim. The Snail Essence is a 96% snail filtrate humectant; it will hydrate and support barrier repair, not erase acne scars. The brand publishes that distinction on the box. That candour — rare in skincare — is why dermatologists in the UK and US recommend it.
