The glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans in snail secretion bind water and form a hydrating film on the skin surface, while smaller peptides and allantoin signal keratinocytes and fibroblasts to migrate — the same cellular activities snails use to repair their own tissue. A trace amount of naturally-occurring glycolic acid contributes very mild surface exfoliation.

Fabi et al. (2013) showed measurable improvements in periorbital wrinkles and skin texture after twelve weeks of SCA filtrate use.
