Madecassoside is the most-studied of the four centella triterpenoid saponins (collectively called centellosides). It signals fibroblasts to upregulate collagen-I synthesis, inhibits the NF-κB inflammation pathway, and accelerates re-epithelialisation in wound-healing models — the cellular basis behind centella's "cica" (scar-care) reputation. Ceramide NP plugs the lipid gaps in the stratum corneum so the calming and repair work is locked in overnight without water loss.
What the evidence shows
Bylka et al. (2013) reviewed centella triterpenes and concluded madecassoside specifically drives the collagen-I upregulation effect. Multiple small clinical studies on centella-isolate creams have shown measurable reduction in erythema and TEWL (transepidermal water loss) within 4 weeks. Texture / feel
Soft cream-gel that spreads thin — a little goes far. Sinks to a slight tacky finish that disappears within 30 minutes of application; pillow-transfer is minimal. Fragrance-free; faint clean herbal note from centella extract. Slightly cooling on application, which most users read as "calming."
